Proposed Road Closure

11 November 2020

The creation of Chapel Plaza is part of the first stage of delivering the Jetty Road Glenelg Masterplan, creating a new public plaza with seating, public art and new trees and plantings, which will offer a new welcoming space for the local community and visitors.

Construction of Chapel Plaza will require permanently closing the section of Chapel Street north of Milton Street to vehicle through-traffic.

Pursuant to Section 32 of the South Australian Road Traffic Act 1961 the City of Holdfast Bay gives notice that it is proposing to close Chapel Street between Jetty Road Glenelg and Milton Street, as per the diagram below.

Chapel Street, north of Milton Street, is proposed to be closed to vehicle through-traffic from April 2021, with the following conditions:

  1. access from Milton Street to the rear of several properties will be preserved in the design, for pickup and delivery to the rear laneway from the Milton Street/Chapel Street junction to the south
  2. to address safety and movement of traffic past the school on Chapel and Milton Streets, a school drop off and pick up clearway is proposed on the eastern side of Chapel Street south of Milton Street during 8-9am and 3-4pm on school days
  3. a new access to the carpark of St Andrews by the Sea church is proposed to be created on Milton Street and two (2) parking spaces on Milton Street removed
  4. three (3) short term parking spaces in the new Chapel Plaza area would be removed.

Vehicle movement along Jetty Road will not be impacted by closing of the section of the street for the Plaza, as Chapel Street at that location is already one way (on to Jetty Road only).

It is intended that vehicle and pedestrian access along Jetty Road will be maintained throughout construction.
