Construction begins in Chapel Plaza and Hindmarsh Lane

19 April 2021

The first stage of a redevelopment of Jetty Road, Glenelg is underway with a $3.6 million upgrade of Chapel Street and Hindmarsh Lane.

Part of Chapel Street – a small, one-way road off Jetty Road – is now closed to traffic as work begins to transform it into a new public plaza. It will have more seating, lighting, a stunning new piece of public art and more trees, which will create a new and welcoming open space for the community and visitors.

Although the section of Chapel Street between Milton Street and Jetty Road is now closed to vehicles, there is still pedestrian access along Chapel Street.

Across from Chapel Street is Hindmarsh Lane, which is now closed to all public access. Hindmarsh Lane will be significantly upgraded to help strengthen pedestrian connections within the precinct and will include new public toilets, a parent room and a Changing Places toilet for the profoundly disabled.

With construction now underway, the Hindmarsh Lane public toilets are closed. The closest toilets can be found on the northern side of the Glenelg Town Hall, at Wigley Reserve and at the Bayside Village Shopping Centre at the eastern end of Jetty Road during the centre’s opening hours.

City of Holdfast Bay Mayor Amanda Wilson is excited to see the start of the redevelopment works, given the construction plans were put on hold last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Glenelg is a major shopping, entertainment and tourism destination and this investment by council and the State Government will go a long way to improve the attractiveness and accessibility of the public spaces in and around Jetty Road,” Mayor Wilson said.

“The Chapel Plaza and Hindmarsh Lane upgrade is the first stage of the Jetty Road Glenelg Masterplan, that will see the whole Jetty Road precinct redeveloped.

“The future-proof design and planned upgrades will enable the Jetty Road precinct to maintain its longevity into the next 30 years.”

The construction period is being undertaken over the winter months to avoid the busiest trading months along Jetty Road Glenelg. The City of Holdfast Bay is working with businesses, property owners, residents and other groups in the area to minimise any disruption during construction.
