Warriparri Greening Project is now complete

1 November 2024

The five-year, multi-stage greening project along the Warriparri (Sturt River) has ended, with a small ceremony held on Monday 28 October, to acknowledge the work done by Council staff and volunteers.

The project, funded by Green Adelaide and the City of Holdfast Bay, resulted in more than 10,000 native plants being planted across four reserves in Glenelg North and other habitat features such as logs, rocks and nest boxes.

At the ceremony, Deputy Mayor Susan Lonie was joined by Kaurna Elder Frank Wanganeen, Professor Chris Daniels, Chair of the Green Adelaide board and Christine Benger from the Friends of Sturt River Landcare group to add four Lotus australis (austral trefoil) seedlings to Shannon Avenue Reserve. Lotus australis (austral trefoil) is a small perennial herb that attracts native butterflies.

Weed control in the new garden bed will be ongoing, with watering of the Eucalyptus camaldulensis (river red gums) occurring over the summer.
