Successful Gross Pollutant Trap Installation

17 December 2024

The Somerton Stormwater Project reached a significant milestone with the installation of Whyte Street’s Gross Pollutant Trap (GPT). Following weeks of preparation on and off-site, the GPT was successfully installed on Friday 13 December 2024.

Prior to installation:

  • The site was excavated nearly 5 metres deep, with steel shoring boxes providing a safe working area.
  • The excavation site had dewatering equipment installed and pumped for over a week.
  • A custom-designed GPT was constructed off-site.

Installation day:

  • The site was busy with traffic and safety officers, contractors, and engineers.
  • The GPT was transported to the site on three separate trucks.
  • A crane was manned to lower the GPT into place carefully, and contractors made minor manual adjustments. Please see the photos below.

This GPT is the 9th to be installed in the Holdfast Bay region, with two more to come next year as part of this project. These important pieces of infrastructure collect debris and pollutants, resulting in cleaner water entering our oceans.
