In 2022, the Somerton Park Tennis Club successfully applied for a $35,500 grant from the Office for Sport, Recreation and Racing, to install new sports lighting. The project was to be co-funded by the club and intended to replace existing lights that required renewal while also reducing light spill for neighbouring residents.

The Office for Sport, Recreation and Racing committed $35,500 to upgrade the court lighting with a co-contribution of $35,500 from the Somerton Park Tennis Club. Remaining investment to meet court surfaces and fencing requirements will be provided by the City of Holdfast Bay and the Australian Government’s Local Roads Community Infrastructure Program.

Significant costs are involved in upgrading the base of the courts to ensure longevity and minimal court cracking in the future. In addition, surface runoff and drainage issues will be remediated, which will increase the life cycle of acrylic court surface to approximately 10 years. Overall investment will reduce maintenance for the club and increase safety when the courts are used in wet weather.

The project will commence in June 2024 with completion prior to the start of the 2024-2025 tennis season.
