Update and decision for Naming of Two Roads

29 April 2024

When we went out to engagement and why

The community was invited to share its views on seven suggested names for two new public roads within a new residential estate located on Sturt Road at Brighton. Community engagement is required before assigning new road names under the council’s Naming of Public Places Policy. The engagement process began in early March 2024 and ran for twenty-one days. Residents living adjacent to the development site were notified by letter, in addition there was signage on the property, Council’s websites and Facebook page. The community were invited to provide feedback via direct mail, email, telephone, in-person enquiries, or via completing an online survey.

What we heard

At the close of the engagement period, 513 contributions were received, and the majority made their selections based on the seven suggested names. The engagement findings showed a preference for the name Minear, receiving 325 nominations. The names; Pearson, Hackett, Wauchope and Somerville received 87, 79, 71 and 62 nominations respectively. Of the names not on the list endorsed by Council, 34 contributions were received, with the community showing a preference for the name ‘LeCornu’, which received 11 nominations. Full details of the engagement results are provided in the attached Engagement Report.

Conclusion and next steps

Considering the community engagement findings, the Council resolved to assign the names ‘Hackett Way’ and ‘Minear Lane’ to the two new roads. These road names will now be formally gazetted.
